A VISIT TO CIRE TRUDON'S PARIS BOUTIQUE

While in Paris for the Maison & Objet show, we made time to visit the Cire Trudon boutique in St. Germain de pres on the rue de Seine. It is a beautiful space that displays this very special brand's product in unique and imaginative ways. For over four centuries, Cire Trudon has built an unrivalled candle manufacturing expertise. Skillful and demanding, Maison Trudon draws its talent from its craftsmanship heritage and never ceases to innovate. With a wax paste made of vegetable substances, forming a unique blend, miscible with any fragrance and allowing a perfect long-lasting combustion.

Provide has been carrying the scented candles for a few months now (and they have had a great reception), but it was wonderful to see the pillers, sprays, wax busts, accessories and more all merchandised with such flair. We just may have to offer that Napoleon bust soon.

WOVEN LINES SEEN AT MAISON & OBJET IN PARIS

Another strong theme coming out of the recent Maison & Objet show in Paris was texture and specifically the idea of an exaggerated weave or thick line. Shown above are different variations of this theme and in different materials. The bottom image is from the very impressive Missoni Home booth that showcased new products and textiles for the coming season. We absolutely loved this print of an over scaled weave, sometimes in solid colours and other times in the classic Missoni chevron pattern in a range of colours from the seasonal collection. Provide is excited about offering more Missoni Home, stay posted for details on that in the coming months.

GEOMETRICS SEEN AT MAISON & OBJET IN PARIS

We have just finished three full days of walking the halls of Maison & Objet in Paris and there are several themes emerging for us that will influence our buying decisions for the coming few seasons. Of course I am partial to this first one, as Geometrics was a very big part of our Provide Made debut collection. It popped-up in several places and the above photographs illustrate some of the collections that we are very interested in bringing to Provide – look for details on this coming soon.

MEETING WITH SANDY CHILEWICH DURING DAY 1 OF MAISON & OBJET

Robert and myself attended the first day of Maison & Objet with budding interior designers (and good friends) Angela and Lawrence. It was great to see the show (at least part of it) through their eyes and get feedback on what caught our attention. Passing by Chilewich's booth, we were lucky enough to meet Sandy Chilewhich herself who very graciously spent some time with us discussing her new designs and her thoughts for the upcoming spring season. We loved the new grid placemats available in four different colours including the very fresh looking chartreuse. She showed us some different layering options and her personal favourite – using the metallic lace placemats and runners over the grid to great interesting texture and depth. Very stylish!

MARTHA STURDY NEW YORK GIFT SHOW PREVIEW

Just before leaving for Maison et Objet in Paris, we visited the Martha Sturdy showroom while they were preparing for the New York Gift Show happening later this month. We were lucky enough to get a preview of some beautiful designs in their new charcoal marble colour We immediately placed an order for several items (look for them to arrive later this week) and we have our eye on this fabulous new lamp – it will look very stylish behind the cash desk at Provide!

Sarah Péloquin – a student at Emily Carr completing her BFA, works mainly within the realm of ceramics to explore the relationship between form and function through unique and hand-crafted pieces.

We discovered Sarah's work at the Future Masters Vol 2. exhibit at the recent IDS West show and were immediately impressed with her beautiful and original creations. Her work is strongly inspired by architecture and geometry and highlights the relationship between fine art, craft and design by exploring themes and processes that are strongly linked to each discipline.

JOSHUA VAN DYKE'S ARTWORKS NOW ON VIEW AT PROVIDE

Provide is excited to announce that a show of Joshua Van Dyke's work is now on view at Provide – and we have to thank a friend of Provide (who luckily owns one of his amazing pieces) for introducing us to him and his work.

Joshua Van Dyke works with painting and sculpture from a small island studio off the coast of Vancouver. His practice explores notions of collection and display, materiality and the overlapping of geographic and cultural boundaries.

In his popular series 'The Hunt', used skateboard decks are fashioned into antler and wildlife trophies. Influenced by a connection to materials and the environment, his labour-intensive works reprocesses every part of the skateboard, transforming their meaning to convey ideas about tribalism, ritual and the environment

Van Dyke has exhibited in Vancouver, Glasgow and Finland. He was the recipient of an Olympic Torch grant in 2010 for the public art installation 'Corridor'. Recently, he was one of four artists selected to participate in the softshelter project with Molo, an internationally acclaimed industrial design house.

Van Dyke earned a BFA from Glasgow's esteemed School of Art in 2007. Currently he lives and keeps a studio on Bowen Island, BC.

PROVIDE MADE NEW CUSHION COLLECTION

Our first collection under the name PROVIDE MADE was created with the Provide customer in mind – we listened to what you were looking for, and the result are these graphic and vibrantly coloured cushions. The graphic language for our first collection of cushions is very geometric – it utilizes the shape of a cube which is then duplicated to create patterns that are energetic, expressive and highly dimensional – and of course all work great together.

Hand-woven silk dyed in rich, saturated colours from fuschia to eggplant and a raw ecru where produced in collaboration with Mitun Chakrabarti whose company Rajboori works with highly skilled artisans in India. The silks are an eco-friendly variety called "peace silk" that have the comfort and durability of cotton while maintaining the richness in colour and depth of most precious silks. The cushions are then assembled meticulously by hand using quilting-like techniques, appliques and a detailed stitched overlay in bright orange.

Sharon Halpin of Fruition Design has just had a beautiful example of her work published in the new issue of Western Living Condo Magazine. This stylish 1,400-square foot condo in Yaletown's Murchies Building designed for a young professional is the ultimate bachelor pad. Her discerning eye has created a space that is sophisticated for everyday living and the perfect backdrop for (wild) entertaining. Sharon has picked some great items to furnish the space and we at Provide love that she used us as her resource to accessorize. Christian's bed also doubles as a backdrop to showcase Provide's debut designs for our own in-house collection. IDS West took place this past weekend at the Vancouver Convention Centre and was a great success for Provide – it was our first show and we were delighted to be part of it. The feedback on our booth and what we were showcasing was tremendous. It seemed like we were constantly busy, but I was able to get away to explore the show and see what the other exhibitors had on display. Above are some shots from suppliers to Provide: MTH Woodworks, Martha Sturdy and Christian Woo – it was great to see our friends at the show and I was totally impressed with their presentations. Martha Sturdy did a great job with creating an unexpected space to showcase her beautiful resin and metal pieces of furniture and accessories, as well Christian's Kitchen featuring a walnut island was absolutely beautiful. The bottom picture is a wood sphere by Brent Comber, who without a doubt had the most striking space.

IDS West opened last night at the Vancouver Convention Centre and Provide had an amazing reception as people dropped by to view our debut display and converse. We met some great new people and had a chance to reconnect with friends at this terrific event that we are very excited to be a part of. The show runs until Sunday at 5pm and promises to be Western Canada's premier event for home decor and design – featuring fabulous speakers such as Ross Lovegrove, Omer Arbel and Suzzane Dima Editor of House & Home magazine.

ARTISTIC CREATIONS FROM ESKAYEL

Eskayel is the creation of Brooklyn based artist and designer Shanan Campanaro who digitally manipulates her own paintings to create innovative and unique textiles and wallpapers. For her recently released Era collection, the designs were born from Shanan's memories of travelling in Italy: the stone work, the olive groves, the dramatic cliffs on the coast. This inspiration results in fantastically patterned bespoke textiles and wallpapers all with the artists's painterly touch.

Eskayel has gained much attention in the press including Interior Design Magazine, The New York Times and Lonny. Provide will be showcasing the pillows (which have to be seen in person - they are beautiful!) and will have a sample book for the wallpaper on hand for special orders.

The Original range reissues some of Anglepoise's classics. These products were designed and manufactured more than 70 years ago and work wonderfully in todays interiors.

HEATH CERAMICS LOS ANGELES SHOP VISIT

Robert and I are in Los Angeles for a bit of a weekend away visitings some friends, but of course we had to take some time out to see what was going on for home decor retail while we are down here. The Heath Ceramics Los Angeles shop was our first stop and our visit was perfectly timed for an "Open Studio" event.

It was great to finally see the shop in person – we have admired the design by Commune with its beautiful loft-like feel and multi-functional space. We were immediately drawn to the display of the House Industries and Heath Ceramics number tiles. These were just samples of what will be available for purchase next month. Robert and I are looking into the possibility of having these available at Provide, ask us if you are interested.

It was also thrilling to see some of the unique designs available at the shop including works by its Artistic Director Adam Silverman and by Japanese artist Akio Nukaga (we bought two pieces by both). In addition, the shop was well stocked with pieces from the Heath Ceramics collection and we were able to see product in the new colours Fawn and Coccoa.

The visit to the shop reaffirmed why we are so passionate about the Heath Ceramics and why we truly believe in the vision of the company – very inspiring!

DESIGNER FOCUS: CALEB SIEMON

ICFF starts today in New York City and although Provide will not be attending this years event, we are up-to-date with what some of our suppliers are showcasing. Caleb Siemon and Carmen Salazar without a doubt will have one the most stunning collections on view at the show. New work featured are handblown pendants shaped in lead free crystal, all designed and made by this creative and highly skilled team in California.

The Chaos pendants (middle picture) use a chaos wrap over clear or metallic crystal. Differences in melting temperatures are exploited to create a textural and bulbous surface. The wraps create unique and dynamic shadows on the surrounding environment. The Silver pendants (bottom) will patina over time creating a beautifully textured surface.

Although, Caleb Siemon does have an extensive collection, Provide is currently working with them on several special commissions in both lighting and vessels. At Provide, we are able to suggest and arrange special one-off pieces with many of the designers we work with to create truly unique installations.

BEND FURNITURE ARRIVING SOON AT PROVIDE

Provide is excited to announce a BEND as a new addition to our growing furniture collection.

Bend is a furniture company from Los Angeles, California founded by designer and entrepreneur Gaurav Nanda. The Bend wire chairs and tables are made up of intricate arrangements of wires or lines through a hand crafted method of shaping and spot welding, a process they like to call "bending". Each bend is carefully arranged to ensure structural strength, while the angles of the back, the curves of the seat, and the closeness of the wires are designed to encourage relaxation and comfort.

Rust proofed and powder coated, Bend is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, and in various styles and colours (named Lucy, Ethel, Bunny and Drum). Look for them to arrive at Provide in the coming weeks.

The Leda desk lamp (pictured at top), casts a bright, focused and adjustable light ideal for reading and writing. A custom-made shade paired with a subtlety curved stem make for an elegant and unified composition. The Leda is available in Black and Ivory at Provide and in Orange and Pewter by special order. MILAN DESIGN WEEK: ZONA TORTONA

Monday is our last day in Milan and we are reflecting on all that we saw this past week and without a doubt what left the biggest impression was the Zona Tortona. Located in the south west of Milan, The Zona Tortona was filled with a staggering amount of temporary exhibitions and installations during design week. We were amazed by the creativity and the innovation on view - many buildings we entered, transported us through sound, lighting and visuals to unexpected places. It was so impressive and so large, we returned for a second day to experience more. Some of the highlights are pictured above with exhibitions by Toshiba, Samsung and Cannon.

THE SCALE OF MILAN

While walking the halls of the Milan furniture fair, Robert and I discovered a huge array of beautiful product – but we also realized that scale was everything. It really was impressive seeing the size of the "booths" (if you can call them that) of some the big brands. Above are just a few pictures that I took and the one that really made the biggest impact (with a great sense of playfulness) was Kartell. Kartell's space was massive with various built-up structures and signage that paid reference to advertising from a bygone era. Of course the graphic designer in me was thrilled to see the dimensional typography all creatively assembled – very cool!

MILAN DESIGN WEEK: RINA MENARDI

Yesterday, Robert and I took the trip out to the fair grounds where the Salone was in full swing. It was our first time to the show and it was quite overwhelming approaching the entrance (among thousands of people) to the vast complex of buildings. We decided to head straight for a familiar face – Rina Menardi in hall 16. To our delight, Rina has introduced some stunning new designs and colours to her collection. Above are just a few pictures of the beautiful pieces that we instantly placed an order for. In our first stop at the show, both Robert and I knew our trip to Milan was an immediate success.

The rest of the day was spent viewing impressive displays by some of the most important brands in the industry – It was truly inspiring. More to come...

MILAN: ROSANNA ORLANDI

Our first full day in Milan for Salone del Mobile was spent walking the streets viewing showrooms and special exhibitions within the city itself including a Wallpaper installation at Brioni, Skitsch and B&B Italia. The highlight was without a doubt the designers assembled by Rossana Orlandi at her concept store in the south west of the city centre. Spazio Rossana Orlandi is a multi-level, multi-room complex of buildings and outdoor spaces that are worth the trip to Milan in itself. On view where designs by Jamie Hayon, Bocci, Muuto and Jasper Morrison, just to name a few.

Tonight is the Bacarat party and whatever else we can squeeze in. Tomorrow is day one of the show...

NADIA PIGNATONE'S ACCESSORIES NOW AT PROVIDE

We are just days away before Robert and I leave for Milan to attend the 2011 Salone del Mobile. We are very excited to see the show and what great timing as we are introducing a new accessories collection from Italian artist and designer Nadia Pignatone. Nadia will be showcasing her beautiful work at Moroso's stand in Milan and we will be sure to stop by. Inspired by warm-weather hues, the 2011 Summer Seasonal collection focuses on two yellow glazes, one glossy and one matte. As well, a soft white is mixed in on sides of serving platters, cups and vases that reminds one of sandy shorelines. The Spun Vase (bottom) is made in a limited quantity of 150 where the top layer of the glaze is stripped away with an etching tool to reveal the glaze beneath.

The other day Robert and I paid a visit to Martha Sturdy's showroom to select some new items from her beautiful collection. We were on a mission to pick-up more resin pieces in the new soft grey colour (shown above) that has been selling incredibly well since we introduced it at Provide a few weeks back. The gallery is a beautiful space that showcases her art, furniture and accessories – it is continually evolving as Martha introduces new creations. I loved the grouping of white marble resin tables in various shapes and her new wood objects.

Last night, Robert and I went to dinner at Morimoto, located in The Waikiki EDITION. The EDITION was conceived by Ian Schrager (one of the originators the boutique hotel concept) in partnership with Marriott International and is a beautiful lifestyle luxury resort. Although we didn't stay there (we wanted to be on the beach), we thought we would check out the property and enjoy a fabulous dinner at Chef Massahar Morimoto's Waikiki outpost of his famous New York restaurant. Both the hotel and the restaurant where great to see and experience – I think we know where we will stay the next time we are in Honolulu.

COLOURS FROM HAWAII'S NORTH COAST

Robert and I are in Hawaii – enjoying a bit of break from the store and the cold weather in Vancouver.

On Thursday, we took a drive up to the North Coast which is famous for its surfing and a more laid back atmosphere – each beach we stopped at was beautiful and we were witness to some incredible waves. Lunch was at one of the many road-side Shrimp joints and we lucked out as some locals at the next table said we picked the best one.

Provide has just received a delivery of beautiful throws and blankets from Spain's Teixidors. We discovered Teixidors while attending Maison et Objet in Paris last fall and are very excited to now represent this unique collection in our store.

Teixidors' products are made entirely by hand using classic wool looms – the best raw materials (Merino wool, cashmere, cotton and linen) are used and follow a strictly manual process. The collection consists of a wide range of styles and colours utilizing these natural materials. The "Sisteron" throws (pictured above with the yellow and orange trim) are made from 100% ecological merino wool.

We at Provide just received the February issue of Canadian House & Home and were delighted to see some of our product featured in a beautiful editorial about a Whistler renovation. This stunning home belongs to Krista Cooper and her husband Chris – both fabulous supporters of Provide. Interior design credit goes to Lesli Balagno and Joel Trigg of one of Vancouver's leading firms: Heffel Balagno Design Consultants (also great supports of our store). Styling was done by designer Carrie McCarthy – and yes, you guessed it another great friend of Provide.

Luxurious pillows and throws featured throughout this ultimate ski cabin are from local designer Catherine Regehr (exclusively at Provide). In the last image is Catherine's silk small porcupine duvet with a fur throw and pillow – perfect for cool winter nights after a day on the slopes.

HEATH CERAMICS & HOUSE INDUSTRIES

This past holiday, one of our favourite suppliers Heath Ceramics sent us a ceramic tile as a holiday card. It is quite a beautiful object and is the result of a collaboration between Heath Ceramics and House Industries, a type foundry. This of course peaked the interest of the graphic designer in me and I had to find out more. The collaboration cumulated at an event at Heath's Los Angeles store called the Holiday Heath House opening. Check out the House Industries blog for pictures from the event and there were some impressive guests in attendance. It would have been great to be there – but at least we have a tile.

DESIGNER: SHEREEN DE ROUSSEAU

Today I visited the studio of jewellery designer Shereen de Rousseau – it was very interesting to witness her at work on one of her beautiful creations. The studio itself has a very authentic feel with tools in abundance and by the distressed quality of various work surfaces – a testament to the involved process that goes into making each hand-crafted piece of jewellery. All her charms and medallions are hand cast using silver or bronze, beads and stones are individually tied on silk and to finish the exacting process, each piece is hand polished.

Artist Caleb Siemon who works closely with his wife Carmen Salazar at their Italian style studio in Santa Ana California, consistently produces unique and enduring glass vessels and lighting. Caleb's signature aesthetic is a combination of his training in Murano, Italy and his affection for the restraint of Scandinavian glass traditions. VISITING THE PARKER HOTEL IN PALM SPRINGS

While we were in Palm Springs we stopped in at the Parker Hotel to get a first hand view of the hotels decor and amenities. The Parker was designed by Jonathan Adler (who's pottery is available at Provide) and is a glamourous mix of 60's Palm Springs and a whimsical modern style. The lobby is filled with unexpected items that when combined together create an overall look that makes you feel as if your where transported back in time to the days of the Rat Pack.

We had a lovely lunch outside at Norma's and then walked the very impressive grounds that are truly an oasis in the middle of the desert. We dreamed about staying at one of the suites like the Gene Autry Residence (yes, he lived there) and lounging by the pool in the beautiful California sun. Dreams can come true, right?

Robert and I are in Palm Springs enjoying some sun and a bit of free time before the holiday rush starts. We are staying at our good friend Dean Wershler's beautiful house that has a terrific view from the pool (see above). We checked out the Ace Hotel last night and had a great time playing bingo as we were entertained by the fabulous Linda Gerard. Last night we attended the launch party for Caya. Caya is a new retail store concept created by Telus that celebrates individuality and diversity by supporting the local LGBTQA community. Robert was selected months ago to be part of a team of advisors that helped shape the Caya concept (hence his picture on the wall). The store is located at the corner of Davie and Howe street and is impressive space to behold. We were then whisked away to another location for a private dinner in the company of Telus President and CEO, Darren Entwistle. The evening was hosted by Kenn Hamlin who was instrumental in Caya's birth. Thank you Kenn for a fantastic evening, it was great to be a part of it. Check out their website for more details.

OPENING NIGHT AT IDS WEST 2010

Last night we attended the opening event for IDS West at the new Vancouver Convention Centre. The new location is the perfect backdrop and really elevates this event to something on par with Toronto or New York. The exhibitors all did an impressive job with their presentations – the overall effect was stylish and very sophisticated.

Some of the great designers showcasing their work also have their product available at Provide, including Christian Woo, Martha Sturdy, John Ross Designs, MTH Woodworks and Catherine Regehr who collaborated with Brent Comber. It was great to see some new designs from them and we hope to have them in our store soon.

It was also and opportunity for us to talk and reconnect with people in the industry that we don't normally see. For instance, we stopped in at the Cross's booth and where blown away by their creativity, warmth and good humour. Great job guys!

MANY OF PROVIDE'S LOCAL SUPPLIERS WILL BE AT IDS WEST

IDS West begins this week (October 14th – 17th at the Vancouver Convention Centre) and many of Provide's local suppliers will be showcasing their work including Martha Sturdy (above), Christian Woo, John Ross Designs and MTH Woodworks. In addition, there will be some great friends of Provide exhibiting, including Brent Comber, Fluff, Good Space and False Creek Design Group just to name a few. We will be attending the opening party and will post some of our thoughts this coming friday.

A VISIT TO PEKING LOUNGE

I just payed a visit to one of Vancouver's most unique retail destinations – Peking Lounge. Owned by Daniel Poulin and Michael Bennet, the store contains a great mix of classic Chinese antiques and Asian inspired contemporary design. The two have a great eye for buying as well as creative presentation – I loved the beautiful over-sized mugs (pictured above). Peking Lounge is located in historic Chinatown (just around the corner from Provide) on East Pender Street. The street is going through an amazing change with a new cafe, hair salon and Bob Rennie's gallery all right in a row. We will have to drop by more often.

A NEW TABLE DESIGN FROM MTH WOODWORKS

MTH WOODWORKS have expanded their Bloom collection with the creation of this new coffee table. Salvaged from Vancouver Island, this massive tree base has found a second life as functional art. The top is cast in solid resin made from Peanuts and soybeans and is fused with the wood trunk to create a seamless surface revealing the beauty of the natural wood. RINA MENARDI FOR FALL JUST ARRIVED

Provide was very excited at the store today when three huge boxes from Italy arrived. We rushed to open them up to see the fabulous creations of ceramic artist Rina Menardi in various shapes and colours. We have some pieces that are new to Provide, but have also ordered classic ones that have proven to be very popular in the past. We are just in the process of photographing them individually to upload to our website – in the meantime have a look at the picture above to wet your appetite.

A VISIT TO MERCI IN PARIS

While we were in Paris, on our "free" day from attending the show, we had to check out the latest at our favourite concept store - Merci. Merci, located on the edge of the Marais on Boulevard Beaumarchais seems to draw Parisians in droves from all Arrondissements (not to mention tourists). The store is a large space with different areas, levels and at least 3 cafes. I always like to see what installation they have done in the main entrance, this year they had these incredible flower like lights suspended from a grid in the skylight. The shop is a mixture of home wares, fashion, flowers and lifestyle, all with a presentation that elevates the most utilitarian of objects (like construction lanterns). Although, Merci does have a different concept than Provide, It does share a love of design and the desire to create a new retail experience. Thank you once again for the inspiration Merci!

JAIME HAYON EXHIBIT AT MAISON ET OBJECT (PARIS)

Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon was chosen as designer of the year at Maison et Object 2010. A special exhibition entitled "Moving Ideas", showcased his work and gave insight into Hayon's playful world. The exhibit displayed different phases of his creative process, from sketches to prototypes with a selection of essential pieces that ranged from Hayon's first installations to a preview of his latest unveiled work. Hayon's highly original designs include furniture, lighting and objects that have been produced by such leading brands as Established and Sons, Moooi, Swarovski and Bisazza. The highlight were pieces from Hayon's 'Fantasy' collection for Spanish porcelain manufacturer Lladro, that when viewed awake a sense of magic and wonder.

FROM ITALY TO GERMANY AND HOME

Leaving the beautiful city of Venice was difficult, but even our short time there has enriched us mind, body and spirit. We walked the small streets, getting lost most times (all part of the fun), crossed bridges over the canals, viewed centuries old architecture and dreamt what it must be like to live there. It was magic sitting on the banks of the Dorsoduro sipping crisp white wine, eating rustic pizza – all with the warm glow of the Italian sun us.

On our way back to Vancouver, we made a quick stop in Dusseldorf to meet with one of our most imporant suppliers, DAFF – makers our our fabulous merino wool felt tableware and home collection. Owner, Carin Benter graciously made time to show us around their very efficient and modern facility. It was great to see all of the products in all of the colours available. We also discussed some possible opportunities for future growth between Provide and DAFF, we hope to share details on that with you soon. Pictured above are some new additions to the product line (that we first saw last week at Maison et Object in Paris): A huge range of colour felt i-phone and Blackberry cases and boxes that now come in a 2-ply colour combination with a side handle. Provide will be placing an order for these and expect them to be in the store soon.

We are back in Vancouver now and want to give a huge thanks to Pierre and Lauren for taking such great care of Provide – we know that they worked hard to make everyone's experience at the store a great one. Robert and I are filled with inspiration and ideas from our trip and can't wait to get started with this new fall season. MODERN ART IN VENICE

We arrived in Venice yesterday and our first full day was spent in the company of world class modern art. First on our list was the Palazzo Grassi where we viewed the incredible collection of Francois Pinault with architecture by Tadao Ando. The standout pieces were by Richard Prince (in the style of William de Kooning), Cy Twombly and Takashi Murakami. The mix of modern art and the historic environment was thrilling.

We then crossed over to the Dorsoduro where the Peggy Guggenheim collection is housed in an historic complex where she once lived. On view were some of the greatest works of the 20th century by artists such as Picasso, Brancusi, Duchamp, Braque and Dali. The temporary exhibit was a retrospective of the work of Adolph Gottlieb – it was great to see the evolution of his artistic career. We were much inspired by the beautiful colour, texture and shapes in his works.

VOGUE FASHION NIGHT OUT MILANO

Robert and I took a side trip from Paris, to the fashion and design capital Milan and our timing was perfect for Vogue Fashion Night Out Milano. The event first started in New York as a way to stimulate interest in fashion after the economic downturn and now has spread to other cities. This past Thursday evening, Milan's fashionable set took to the streets in droves. It was incredible to see and we luckily had access to one of the best parties at the DSQUARED2 flagship store.

Milan is truly an inspiring city and our experience was greatly enriched thanks to our friends Dean and Dan (Designers of DSQUARED2) who exposed us to some fabulous restaurants and bars including the very chic Giacomo, 10 Corso Como and the Bulgari hotel. We LOVE Milan for the people, the food, the design and we will surely be back.

PARIS LOVES CANADA

We took a day in Paris to walk (and walk) the streets, checking out the retail scene. We saw some great stuff, but when we came across the windows of Colette, we stopped in our tracks. The windows are covered with maple leaves and the words "We love Canada". At first we thought it was a tribute to two of our favourite designers, Dean and Dan, but on closer inspection it was their take on Canadian winter style. They are featuring Sorel boots, Canada Goose jackets and Douglas Coupland's collection for Roots. The store was packed with people – I guess they will be having a Canadian winter in Paris this year?

DAY 3 AT MAISON ET OBJET

Our third day at the Maison et Objet show in Paris was a very interesting one. We discovered some new suppliers in the "Ethnic" section and met with French company Best Before that utilize artisans in various countries for their contemporary product line. Pictured above are vessels from their macrame collection made in Korea from recycled paper. This ancestral technique is one of Korea's most emblematic crafts and is carried out only by a select few that are skilled in the techniques required to produce these unique pieces.

The Asian connection continued as we viewed the work of artists grouped by the Korean Craft Design Foundation – the highlight was very special creations by Chung Hae Cho in lacquer. We then retraced our steps from the first day where we saw more crafts and design from Taiwan with some beautiful animal figures carved from stone and more truly inspiring artistic creations.

If there is something we came away with today, it is an immense appreciation for artisans and crafts people – to be so focused and disciplined with one's work is something truly to be admired.

MORE GREAT DESIGN FROM PARIS

Today was another busy day of walking the aisles of Maison et Object in Paris. We covered a lot of ground and with the hundreds of companies on display, we worked hard to find the few that fit into the refined Provide aesthetic. Teixidors from Spain, is one such brand that produces luxurious blankets and throws – we ordered a variety in Marino wool and a collection with a strong ecological component (shown above). Look for that to arrive at the store soon.

More interesting things were found in the candles and scents section where we met with True Grace Candles and have our sights on some beautiful room diffusers and others styles that will be new to Provide. We found a French company, named Mad et Len that is doing something highly original, we hope to offer their product soon.

We dropped by the very impressive Nespresso "booth" to see some new finishes in the Citiz machine, refuel and continue on our way. It is hard to express just how big the show is and how one must keep alert, to edit down and discover those hidden gems. The Nespresso helped! More tomorrow...

DAY 1 AT MAISON ET OBJECT PARIS

Provide has arrived in Paris and has finished our first day of walking the halls of one of the world's premier design and decoration shows – Maison et object. It was a great day of meeting with some of our favourite artists and design companies including Rina Menardi and Daff. It was also a chance to reconnect with artists whose work we really believe in and would love to have shown in our environment. Ernst Gamperl's work (pictured above) is absolutely stunning and is sure to find a place in Provide soon. Each of Ernst's creations is a work of art made with a deep understanding of wood and its possibilities.

Tomorrow we hit the show again on the hunt for the best in global design and the intention to offer you something beautiful and unique for your spaces. Look for our posts over the next few days with more from this beautiful city and a very inspiring design fair.
