Zuzunaga is a boutique design studio that creates unique, high quality fashion accessories and home interiors products.

Provide has been proudly representing Zuzunaga in our showroom and online for several years now and we often have the pleasure of catching-up with Cristian and Pedro (the co-owners of the company) on our travels – we recently saw their latest offerings while attending NY Now, a premier Interior Design show held twice a year in New York City.

Both "Bitmap" and "Roots" are striking, new collections of blankets, scarves, apple product covers, carpets and more that have been getting a substantial amount of interest from the press. The rugs Cristian Zuzunaga designed for Brintons have been shortlisted for the Elle Decoration British Design Awards 2014, in the Best British Pattern category.

Inspiration for the collections comes from the digital world – the resulting designs are highly contemporary and dynamic, while the hand-crafted modes of production soften their overall look and make them highly appealing. Famous for their use of colour, Zuzunaga offers these new designs in a wide range of colour combinations and styles. From the bold and the bright, to softer pastel hues, there is something to suit everyone's personal style.

KALEIDOSCOPIC DESIGNS FROM BROOKLYN'S ESKAYEL

Provide is ecstatic about the new Eskayel cushions that just arrived at the showroom. Lead designer Shannon Campanaro continues to amaze us with her unique kaleidoscopic designs. The new arrivals are from her 'Jangala collection', the 'Playland capsule collection' and the 'Island collection'.

Shannon started Eskayel in 2009 when she decided her apartment needed a re-vamp. Wanting to create an accent wall with interesting wallpaper, she thought "why don't I just make my own wallpaper"? From there she found a way to print her custom patterns using a large scale repeat and ended up being incredibly pleased with the results. Gaining recognition on a large scale, her company flourished quickly. Being able to do what she loves, her passion for art drives her dedication to the company (which she runs with her boyfriend, interns and a lot of freelance workers).

Drawing her inspiration from the everyday and her many travels, her fabrics are whimsical and eccentric. I find myself staring at the ambitious shapes as if i'm doing an inkblot test and I need to figure out what I  can make of the designs. It is fascinating to me how she can take a piece of her own art; digitally manipulate it and produce the most unusually beautiful patterns.

THE ARTISTIC PROCESS IS PRIMARY FOR DESIGNER REBECCA ATWOOD IN THE CREATION OF HER ORIGINAL TEXTILES

 

 

New at Provide is a stunning collection of cotton and linen pillows featuring inspired details such as exposed brass zippers, hand dying, appliqués and screen-printing all created by Rebecca Atwood – who we discovered via her Instagram account that beautifully profiles her artistic process.

Based in Brooklyn, designer Rebecca Atwood blends traditional textile techniques and hand painting to create products that are both simple and luxurious. The collection is deeply rooted in Rebecca's everyday observations of her life in Brooklyn as well as her personal history – growing up on Cape Cod surrounded by the ocean, antiques and the family restaurant. Behind each design is a story drawn from her collection of family heirlooms, textures found in nature, vintage patterns discovered at flea markets, inspired colour combinations from world travels or a composition from her sketch book. These experiences and collections are layered together to inspire pieces that are thoughtfully crafted and casually elegant.

CREWEL EMBROIDERED CUSHIONS FROM UK'S NIKI JONES

Provide is happy to present the beautiful collection of home textiles from UK textile designer Niki Jones. Niki embraces this rich world of folk art and hand craft and gives it her own unique contemporary twist by re-inventing these age-old crafts. Mixing old and new, stylish and unpredictable, serious and whimsical, no two items in the Niki Jones collection are quite the same. With each piece telling it's unique story - from its humble beginnings to it's final destination, as a treasure to take pride in a place in your home.

These cushions are inspired by such things as Moroccan tile flooring, to elements of old Uzebekistan textiles as well as modernist paintings. The use of a crewel embroidery technique helps to emphasis the flow of the patterns and the shapes of the motifs.

A FULL SPECTRUM EXPERIENCE AT MAISON ET OBJET IN PARIS

 

Robert and I have just experienced three inspiring days of walking the immense halls of Maison et Objet in Paris, where leading designers and brands from around the globe converge twice a year to showcase their latest collections.

Always a great experience, this year the Maison et Objet show inspired us with beautiful and colourful objects for the home – some of which we have hand selected and will be offering at Provide in the coming months. Colour was important this season and a few brands in particular fully embraced this trend of offering their designs in a full spectrum of options.

A highlight of the show was Klaar Prims (pictured at top), a Belgium based glass artist that showcased a wide range of her elegant and sophisticated work including these mouth blown crystal bowls that are made in a variety of colours.

Bethan Gray (second from the top) recently won best British Designer from Elle Decoration UK and her Brogue tables that made their debut at Maison et Objet confirmed this prestigious acknowledgement. With three legs, these wood tables feature coloured, hand crafted leather tops with brogue detailing – so simple and incredibly stylish.

The brand Zuzunaga (third from the top) is synonyms with colour – in fact they were recently awarded with the best pixilation prize in the Wallpaper Design Awards 2014. Their "Integrate Time and Space" collection features handwoven pillows, throws and blankets in over scaled designs from the pixel theme – now with a black base that gives the coloured wool yarns real pop.

UK's True Grace (pictured at bottom) is a boutique candle maker and has long been part of Provide's offering. At the show, we were very excited to see their new "Curious" collection that features amazing new scents in a variety of coloured glass containers and packages. We placed an immediate order and know these will be a hit for spring and summer 2014.

Overall the show ran the full spectrum with many ideas and concepts on display, but the theme of colour multiples was what inspired us most.

GRAPHIC & TEXTURAL KNITS FOR THE HOME BY TABULA RASA, NOW AT PROVIDE

Provide is pleased to offer Tabula Rasa, a new home knit collection in our showroom and online.

Tabula Rasa was recently launched in New York City by Emily Diamandis, the former head sweater designer for fashion label Rag & Bone. With over a decade of experience working in knitwear, the brand Tabula Rasa was born from Diamandis's desire to amalgamate her extensive fashion expertise, love of interiors, travel and found objects.

The Tabula Rasa collection consists of luxurious knit pillows, throws, blankets and accessories for your home, with many that are also available in smaller, travel sizes. The brand is characterized by its graphic sensibility and highly textural quality – Italian yarns are looped into 3-D ditches, hand crochets and jacquard knits all come into play to create a distinctive and unique voice.

Bridging a gap between fashion and home decor, Tabula Rasa has already received impressive press attention from Vogue Magazine, Robb Report and Design Milk to name a few.

DOUG JOHNSTON – HANDMADE COTTON CORD BOWLS, BASKETS & BAGS

Doug Johnston is a Brooklyn based artist and designer who creates minimal, yet highly detailed bowls, baskets and bags from cotton cord and nylon thread. Each piece is made without the use of forms or moulds. The process involves coiling cord and stitching it onto itself using a zigzag stitch on a vintage, industrial sewing machine. The technique used is based on some of the oldest methods of ceramic pottery and basket weaving, with each piece created being unique in its slight variations of shape and stitching.

Doug Johnston comes from a background in architecture and fine arts and began making his own bags several years ago from an interest in dimensional forms and the materials he uses. The technique he eventually perfected follows after his experiments in large-scale weaving and knitting, and he thinks of the pieces architecturally – like small studies for spaces and shapes.

The pieces are modern and simple, created to celebrate their materiality and hand-formed construction. The colour blocks come from changing the thread colour that binds the cotton cord together. The thread serves as both the structure and the decoration of each piece. Functional for storage and carrying – these  pieces are unique, stylish accessories for your home and lifestyle.

A THRILLING TRIP TO NEW YORK FOR ICFF AND DESIGN WEEK

ICFF and New York Design Week takes place every year in mid May and this year I had the pleasure of once again attending this inspiring and event filled week.

ICFF is the premier furniture and home decor show in North America where the latest from the world of design is presented. Of course it is always great to meet with our suppliers and have the opportunity to see first hand their latest offerings as well as discover new products to add to our edited mix.

At the show, Eskayel's (top photograph) booth was filled with beautiful textiles and designer Shannon Campanaro shared with me her thoughts and inspirations on their new "Lora" collection. We at Provide will be placing an order next week and look forward to receiving items from this unique collection soon.

Next I saw Caleb Siemon and Carmen Salazar, the glass artists and designers behind Siemon & Salazar (second photograph). This year they showcased stunning new lighting including pendants, table lights, a chandelier and a sophisticated brass fixture that features hand-crafted brass chain from which multiple glass pendants hang. In a word, amazing!

Teixidors (third photograph), whom we often get to see in Paris and Barcelona made the trip over to North America to display their luxurious pillows, throws and blankets made from 100% ecological merino wool, cashmere and linen. This collection has been a great success for us and we will be restocking our offering over the coming weeks.

During my stay in New York, I did my best to make a small dent in what else was going on around the city – some of the highlights were: Punk – Chaos to Couture, a fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum; the Jeff Koons show at the Gagosian gallery in Chelsea and the exhibit of Doug Johnston's (last photograph) coiled lighting sculptures at the Mondo Cane gallery in Tribeca. Doug Johnston is a Brooklyn based artist and designer that makes baskets and bags from cotton and nylon cord and creates handmade and "one-off" lighting that are truly works of art. Look for a selection of Doug's baskets and bags to arrive in June at Provide.

LIVELY SUMMER HUES BY JUDY ROSS TEXTILES

 Provide has just received our latest shipment of Judy Ross' cushion designs. With it feeling like summer lately, we are all getting a little anxious to add some colour into our lives. Provide is loving the brilliant peacock and marine blues that mimic the ocean and compliment the vibrant coral, reminding us of summer vacations sitting on the beach, enjoying the cool breeze off the water and basking in the beautiful sunshine.

Combining centuries-old chain stitching techniques with modern bold and geometric patterns, all of Judy Ross' cushions are hand embroidered using the finest 3-ply New Zealand wool. HAND PRINTED KITCHEN TEXTILES FROM PIANO NOBILE

Provide is excited to announce that we will be carrying a new kitchen textiles line by Piano Nobile, a design studio based out of Seattle that creates napkins (sold in sets of two), tea towels and textile trays using all natural, durable, sustainable materials whenever possible.

Each one of their designs is inspired by the sketchbooks of Piano Nobile artists. PROVIDE'S REPORT FROM MAISON ET OBJET 2013 IN PARIS

Robert and I have just completed our 3 day visit of Maison et Objet in Paris – we are highly inspired by what we saw and excited to bring these beautiful, new products for the home to you.

Above is just a quick sampling from some of our current suppliers: Oscar Maschera, Rina Menardi, Teixidors and Missoni Home. We absolutely fell in love with the ceramic and leather stools/tables unveiled by Oscar Maschera – so dramatic. Rina Menardi showed new shapes and colours that we think you will love for the coming spring season. Teixidors, from Spain is such an amazing company and we are always rewarded by reconnecting with them and seeing what new and luxurious textiles they are developing. Missoni Home is such an iconic brand and we are proud to have it as part of our offering – this years collection feels very fresh and sophisticated.

A COLOURFUL COLLABORATION FROM ZUZUNAGA & TEIXIDORS

Provide is pleased to announce that we are now offering the new collection of blankets and pillows designed by Cristian Zuzunaga for Teixidors. Titled "Integrate: Time and Space", the collection is based on the pixelated image and is hand woven on classic wool looms in 100% ecological merino wool. Launched at ICFF 2012 in New York, the collection won the editors award in the Textile category.

Zuzunaga was founded by artist and designer Cristian Zuzunaga with a belief in quality over quantity as well as the restorative and enhancing power of colour. Their philosophy is to uphold sustainable and ethical ways of working, valuing handmade craft over mass-produced, trend following products.

Robert and I had the pleasure of meeting Cristian at his Barcelona studio and were thrilled to talk to him first hand on his design inspirations and thoughts on business. In addition we visited Teixidors (see our previous post on Teixidors) and witnessed these beautiful products being woven by highly skilled crafts people.

A few weeks ago Robert and David returned from Spain and re-merchandised Provide. When I walked in the next day I immediately noticed the beautiful gold and black display wall which David had put together, instantly I fell in love with the elegance and warmth of the gold Martha Sturdy pieces and Judy Ross cushions paired together with the bold ebony blacks of the Pacific Connections lacquer trays and whimsical personality of 'The Black Guest' by Lladro. A VISIT TO TEIXIDORS IN TERRASSA, SPAIN

While in Barcelona, Robert and I made the journey out to Terressa to visit Teixidors, (one of our favourite suppliers) and we were thrilled to witness first hand some of their beautiful textiles being made entirely by hand.

As we entered the workroom, we were immediately stricken with the presence of the wood looms and the highly skilled craftspeople behind them. The physicality of weaving and the precision required by each individual is amazing. Teixidors was created on the philosophy of offering labor and social integration to people with learning difficulties through the manual loom – a versatile, complex and demanding tool that acts therapeutically.

Teixidors is without a doubt a benchmark for tradition and high-quality handicraft production, but it is also a cooperative enterprise that is vitally linked to the contemporary world.
